When our team first arrived at this residence, we found the space littered with abandoned household remnants and garbage, soiled and stained walls, a stripper pole in the living room and a vile smell like the combination of old dried condiment spills and greasy frozen dinners mingled with rotting garbage. The feeling in the home reeked of far too many parties and not enough care to the environment.

Still, there were some very promising foundational elements which could be unearthed and polished, such as original hardwood flooring and ceramic tiles, a freestanding stone fireplace and a large kitchen (renovated within the past 10 years) with ample storage, an island with task lighting, stone countertops, and stainless steel appliances – including a commercial gas range with convection oven. The home also had recently replaced air- tight double pane windows throughout, so it was well protected from external moisture and mold. The previous owner had invested a bit into these upgrades before turning the home over to his 20-something children and moving to Palm Springs to retire.
The clients had an existing feature art piece they intended to place in the home: a large blue-green distressed wooden cross. We brought this into the home in the earliest stages of the project and hung it on the backside of the freestanding fireplace, adjacent to the dining room. We used the combination of the blue tones of the cross against the yellow-orange stones of the fireplace to inform and inspire all of our colour selections for transforming the home. A contrasting tetrad colour scheme was born: blue-green/yellow-orange/red-orange/blue-violet.

We created a fully saturated teal blue feature wall and placed it opposite the fireplace in the living room so that, from the dining room and kitchen, it would visually connect with the colour inspiration for the home: the blue wooden cross art piece.
A lot of time was spent repairing the walls with drywall filler and sanding before the paint applications took place.
We were eager to get the walls covered with paint because we knew that this would seal away the unpalatable scent in the home.

Working with some of the existing furnishings of the clients, we brought in simple accents, such as teal pillows, and an Oster blue-green pots and pans and knives set to tie everything together and form an eclectic yet harmonious feel to the space. The warmth of the clients’ existing heritage yellow-orange bird’s eye maple burl tables fit right in with the overall colour scheme. The home began to come together!
