When the client for this project first contacted us, he wanted some guidance with how to style his new 675 sq ft condo. He was looking for that “Wow!” factor. The previous owner had been a contractor and had done some great renovations to the space on his own, such as removing some of the walls to open up the space and refurbishing the kitchen with new appliances, cabinets, and stone countertops. Our client simply needed our support with how to fit himself and his belongings into the new space and stylize the home for aesthetic appeal.

Because it was a relatively small open condo which had most areas visually connected to each other, we decided to go with a single colour theme for the whole condo. We worked with some of the client’s existing furnishings and art, as well as colours that were already present in the space to create the colour theme to guide and inform our design selections.
The considerations for the colour theme included the existing yellow pine flooring, yellow pine desk and bedroom set, red-orange solid wood cabinets with dark charcoal flecked granite countertops in the kitchen, blue-grey tiles in the bathroom, blue-grey feature wall in the bedroom, blue and white bed linens, dark brown woods of the entertainment centre and end table in the living room, and an antique oval table in the foyer.

The result was a Split Complimentary colour theme consisting of Blue, Yellow-Orange, Red-Orange. Using primarily neutralized tones of these colours with only a few splashes of fully saturated colour, we were able to encompass the existing blue-greys and the light- coloured woods, as well as the rich dark woods, with some dashes of gold tones.

I specified a blue-grey and yellow-red high gloss glass tile for the kitchen backsplash to add to the overall shine of the kitchen.

The client had a number of family portraits so we clustered them together on one “Family Wall” to create a mini-gallery of sentimental moments.

With the neutralized tones of our colour selections, we were able to create a harmonious and tranquil space that came together naturally and almost effortlessly.
